Getting Started with Thrifty Kitchen

Getting started with Thrifty Kitchen is easy - get ready to stop worrying & start enjoying dinner again!  Here's what you do:

  1. Start to stock your pantry and fridge with some necessary staples - see Pantry Stock-up below.

  2. Your Menus and Recipes Plan will arrive by email each Friday, and will also be available in the Subscriber Log-In area. It will contain the coming week's menus, recipes and shopping list.

  3. Plan to do your shopping on Saturday or Sunday and also plan on an hour or so of prep for the coming week following your shopping trip.

  4. Follow the instructions for each day's meal. You can make as many or as few of the recipes as you like, and in any order you like, though be aware that some meals included suggestions for cooking part of a future meal (for instance cooking extra chicken breasts to be chopped for the next night's salad). Also, you will want to make any seafood dishes very early in the week for freshness.

  5. Tips For Maximum Savings:

    1. To stretch your grocery dollar even further, I recommend getting an American Express Blue Cash card. It pays up to 5% cash back on purchases at grocery stores, gas stations and drugstores (including any gift card purchases at those stores) & was recently named the best cashback card by Consumer Reports. I get about $500-600 dollars back each year with mine. Click the link below for more info.

    2. If you're not already a coupon clipper - consider becoming one! You will want a subscription (or two) to your local Sunday newspaper if you don't already get one. This is the best source of coupons each week. My family gets 2 different Sunday papers each week for twice the savings and twice the comics sections! Use the link below to get a discounted subscription to your local paper.

    3. Check in each week with Coupon Mom, who produces a fabulous weekly list of grocery bargains and freebies for grocery stores all over the country.

The Pantry - Items to Keep in Stock:

The items below are used frequently in recipes and you will always want to have a good supply on hand. Most are not perishable, and therefore the best savings come from stocking up when they are at their lowest price, and avoiding purchasing them only as needed. These items will be noted each week, but usually not included in the week's shopping list, as I will assume you have these on hand. Canned goods, oils, eggs and butter can be purchased in bulk at your local warehouse store for great prices.
