Frequently Asked Questions

How much money can I save?

Quite a bit. If you use the Thrifty Kitchen system every week, you should be able to feed a family of 4 on for close to $400 per month. The national average is over twice that amount.

Where do you get your recipes?

Everywhere! I have a large collection of cookbooks as well as subscriptions to some great cooking magazines & newsletters.

What if I don't want to make one or more of the recipes for the week?

No problem - the ingredients on the shopping list are coded by recipe. If you want to make only certain recipes, buy only the items indicated for those recipes.

What if my kids are picky eaters?

The recipes I choose are intended to be family-friendly, but also nutritious and do include a variety of vegetables, fish, spices, etc. You know your family best - if there are ingredients in a recipe you know will be unpopular, you can usually just leave them out.

Do I need any special equipment?

Just a good assortment of pots & pans & typical kitchen appliances. You will need a good slow-cooker and a broiler pan if you don't already own them.

Do you follow your own plan?

Yes! What you see in the weekly plan is what my family is eating that week.

Why are there only six nights worth of menus?

If your family is like mine, there is at least one night each week where you eat dinner with friends, at a school potluck, or the local pizza parlor.
