Using Coupons

Where to Find Them

Coupons can be found in 3 main places. The most important is your Sunday Newspaper. Each week it will have 2-4 inserts filled with coupons. The second, and gaining in popularity, is the internet. You can now print coupons at your own printer from sites such as those below. It's worth checking each week to see if there are any you could use that week. The third place is in the weekly circulars from your grocery store. You may recieve those in the mail, or you can get one at the store when you go to do your shopping.

Use the link below to get a discounted subscription to your local newspaper - the coupons will more than pay for it!

How to Organize Them

The easiest way to organize your coupons is by grocery section. The categories I use are:

Deli; Bakery; Dairy & Eggs; Chips & Pretzels; Breakfast; Juice; Fruit Snacks & Granola Bars; Soda & Water; Frozen; Cookies & Crackers; Popcorn & Nuts; Meat; Hygiene & Medicine; Pets; Paper Products; Cleaners & Laundry; Oils, Spices & Baking; Rice & Pasta; Coffee & Tea; Canned Fruits & Vegetables; International Foods; Dressings & Condiments; Soup; Produce.

Whew! That's a lot of categories, but your coupons will be easy to find when you need them once they are organized. You can use a storebought coupon organizer (though I've never found one with enough sections!) or a shoebox filled with envelopes, or whatever works for you.

Tips & Store Policies

In most areas, at least one grocery chain will double coupons on one or more days per week. In Southern California, VONS and Ralphs will double coupons every day such that the value of coupon + doubling does not exceed $1.00. Both of those stores will double only ONE of a particular coupon per transaction, so if you have two identical coupons the second will only be worth face value. You can use only one coupon per item, but if you are buying two items you may use a coupon for each. If the store has issued their own coupon on an item, you may usually use a manufacturer's coupon as well, but check with your individual store.

What Do I Do With All Those Expired Coupons?

If you find yourself with a large number of expired coupons (and you will!), a great thing to do with them is to send them to military families overseas. The military commissaries will accept coupons as much as 6 months after their expiration date. For details on how to participate in this program, click Here.
